Inspired by the Coast: Behind the Design with Blank Studios
Blank Studios was born out of a shared passion for interiors, combined with a deep understanding of human psychology and the belief that a home should be a sanctuary. Founded by two friends who also became business partners, Blank Studios thrives on the power of collaboration—where two minds bring more depth, creativity, and passion to every project. Their approach is grounded in the idea that great design has the ability to positively impact how we live and feel, with each space carefully crafted to reflect the unique personality and lifestyle of its inhabitants. In this interview, we dive into their design philosophy, the inspiration behind their latest coastal project, and their thoughts on the trends shaping the future of interiors.
Tell us a little bit about yourself, your work and what led you to interiors?
Blank Studios was formed out of a love of interiors, a background in Psychology and the realisation that homes needed to be a place of sanctuary. We knew great design had the ability to positively impact the way we live and feel. Working alongside each other as friends and business partners over the years we have realised the greatness of two minds over one and the added dimension it brings to our company. Combining forces means more depth, more capacity, more creativity and double the passion for every project we work on. Our passion is designing spaces that feel like home, combining personality and lifestyle in our designs that speak to the heart of our clients.
Where did you draw inspiration from for this home?
The beautiful coastal surroundings would be the biggest inspiration here. There were so many colours and textures around us that we wanted to incorporate within this house. Our clients wanted this to feel like a beach house, a beautiful holiday home with a soft injection of colour.
What was important when selecting the carpet?
Texture and durability were the main focuses with the carpet selection. The beach house needed something that would last the family for generations, keep its integrity and feel cosy. We landed on Bremworth Samurai in Hada for this project.
What’s your favourite feature of this project?
Our favourite feature is the 4.7 metre long window seat with the extra large bolster cushions. The custom inbuilt furniture creates a uniqueness to the home and allows the clients to really get what they need out of the space.
What are your top tips for creating a cohesive interior space?
Establish your colour palette in the early stages and reference this continuously during the design process. This colour palette is your foundation when you're selecting paint colours, flooring, furnishings etc. Keep your ‘hero’ pieces to a minimum.
What areas would you recommend saving on, and splurging on when renovating?
Splurge on tapware and lighting. Save on tiles.
Do you have a forecast for flooring trends for the next year?
Dark and moody. We’ve been in a phase of light and bright for quite some time and I think we’re ready to see a shift in the opposite direction.
What interior design trends are you excited to see come through in 2025?
Colour! I think alongside fashion trends, we’re dabbling back into the 90’s with our interiors and we’re looking forward to seeing this.
Day to day, where do you draw inspiration from?
Anywhere and everywhere. A walk along the beach, a favourite piece of furniture and fashion. We also love historical design, it’s like pieces of art.
What are a few of your favourite places to shop for interior decor?
We’re loving Hale Mercantile. Their linens are unmatched when it comes to layering textures and colour for the chic, effortless look. And you can’t go wrong with our local mates, Made of Tomorrow. They offer great finishing pieces like mirrors and shelving which come in a beautiful range of sizes and colours making our job so easy.
What’s next for you? Anything exciting in the pipeline for 2025?
We have some big changes happening behind the scenes here at Blank Studios, 2025 is going to be an exciting year with our company branching to Australia.
